Rick Santorum….A Racist?

So @bauski made a comment about Rick Santorum and what he said about black people on twitter yesterday, and i decided to look it up. The above video highlights two different occasions where Santorum had some racist sounding remarks. Now i’m not sure if this was what he was referring to, but if it is, then I can definitely see how Santorum could be considered racist. However, I would like to present an argument that doesn’t take away from the idea of Santorum being racist, but explains why he could be; and no I’m not a political or election  guru (reminds me too much of high school class presidents races) and I’m neither republican, democrat, or whatever the other party is, so this is not a political rant or a shot at anybody’s political beliefs. I’m just a guy with an opinion. Let’s get to it.

Now the portion of Santorum’s comments on welfare, while in Iowa, are hilarious when you consider that 84% of the people who are on welfare in Iowa are white. However the disturbing part is that we still live in a nation where some people have it in their mind that the world is still Black and White. Had Santorum said, “I don’t want to make  peoples lives better by giving them somebody else’s money.” “I want to give them the opportunity to earn their money and provide for themselves and their families” he would have been just fine; but the people will be funding his campaign need to hear their potential presidential candidate put blame on a particular person or group as to why their money is being “wasted” on degenerates and poor people.

I’m not sure I can blame them though. I mean I make the assumption that most people who have this engrained image of the United States being black and white, were taught this at an early age and had this ideal reinforced for many decades. I mean is it so different from the black family who teaches that the “man” is the root of every negative plight suffered by blacks? Or the stories of slavery and segregation that have been reinforced since black people were young? I mean we don’t look at those things from a strictly historical basis because we would know that there were plenty of white people who were at the lunch counters and on the buses and marching side by side with blacks in a very divided time.

What if Obama, before becoming president, stood up in the middle of black people and said, “It is imperative that we unite as a people and support our own so that we can cripple the white business and show them we don’t need them. We need to teach them that we will never forget what our people went through and suffered”… would you have been all about it? Or would you have questioned him becoming the leader of the free world?

I don’t agree with Santorum’s comments becuase i know that all ethnicities can be found in the welfare, medicad, medicare system. So i’m not gone fault him for saying what his supporters want to hear. I thank him for letting me know where he stands so that I can start to judge him on the content of his character and not the color of his skin.

I mean when you flip the coin, is what he said so different from what you might here at your local barber shop, the comedic satire from one of your favorite black comedians, or from your grandparents house? I’m not so sure!

  1. Is he racists? No. Is he an idiot? Yes. When you dig deeper into what he said you learn that he was incorrect on a lot of things he was saying. Iowa doesn’t have a quota of people to meet for medicaid. There is no Department of Public Welfare in Iowa, there is a Department of Human Services though. From the article: Second, it is unclear to what “fine” Santorum was referring. Iowa, like other states, receives federal reimbursement for the money it disburses in Medicaid fees. There is no quota system or target that the state has to meet in order to be eligible for federal money. The amount of money that each state receives is dependent on its economy.
“The formula is based on how well that state is doing economically and since Iowa is improving its economic status, we are soon to lose a couple percentage points,” said Roger Munns, a spokesman for the Iowa Department of Human Services. “This is not a punishment. This is a recognition that Iowa’s economy is improving relative to other states.”
Although the number of Medicaid recipients in Iowa has increased, like the rest of the country, the number has flattened out in recent months.
“Iowa is in remarkably good shape,” Munns said. “The Medicaid program is fully funded for this fiscal year. Many state legislatures are asking for supplement. Our cost per member continues to be flat and low compared to other states and we continue to be aggressive in making sure that we squeeze out mistakes or fraud.”

He’s not a racists, he’s just an idiot that is playing the game of scaring people & saying foolish things to get votes. It worked for him in Iowa but he won’t be able to sustain it though.

  2. Yannis, I think that Santorum thinks we are idiots. He is now saying that he didn’t say “black” but instead thta it was a slip of the tongue. He states that he started to say one word and stopped and what came out was “bluh”. CMON MAN!!
